Thrice Interview + Giveaway: WHEN AUDREY MET ALICE

Hi! Today we’re celebrating Rebecca Behrens’ release, WHEN AUDREY MET ALICE, which comes out today!

Before we start — why are they called Thrice interviews? The original titles for the Cahill Witch Chronicles were THRICE BLESSED, THRICE CURSED, and THRICE FATED. I have a tattoo with the word thrice, which is partly to remind me how joyful writing that first book was, back when it was just mine, and partly because I like threes. Cate Cahill is the oldest of three sisters, as am I. My birthday is May 3; my anniversary is Sept 30. So there’s a natural theme to these interview questions…

when audreyThey say: First daughter Audrey Rhodes re-creates Alice Roosevelt’s infamous antics in this fun, smart middle-grade debut.

First daughter Audrey Rhodes can’t wait for the party she has planned for Friday night. The decorations are all set and the pizza is on its way. But the Secret Service must be out to ruin her life, because they cancel at the last minute-citing security breach and squashing Audrey’s chances for making any new friends. What good is being “safe and secure” if you can’t have any fun?

Audrey is ready to give up and become a White House hermit, until she discovers Alice Roosevelt’s hidden diary. The former first daughter gives Audrey a ton of ideas for having fun…and more problems than she can handle.

I say:  This sounds exactly like something  middle-grade Jess would have LOVED!

Now for our interview with Rebecca:

1. Describe your main character in 3 adjectives + a noun.

Audrey is a thoughtful, funny, curious first daughter. And Alice is a spirited, smart, headstrong rebel.

2. Describe your book in 3 adjectives + a noun.

Relatable, funny, feminist hijinks (JS: I LOVE THIS.)

3. Describe yourself in 3 adjectives + a noun.

Happy, neurotic, curious dreamer

4. If you could travel to any 3 countries, what would they be?

Spain, Egypt, Fiji

5. If you could take any 3 non-writing-related classes, what would they be?

Painting, plumbing, and paleobotany (JS: Wow, what diverse choices!)

6. If you could have any 3 alternate careers, what would they be?

Baker, judge, veterinarian

7. What are your 3 favorite flowers?

Orchid, rose, tulip

8. What are your 3 favorite foods?

Doughnuts, kale, nachos

9. What are your 3 favorite books?

THE WESTING GAME, THE SKY IS EVERYWHERE, FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS (JS: Ooh, THE SKY IS EVERYWHERE is one of my all-time favorites, too!)

Happy book birthday again, Rebecca, and thanks for stopping by! I hope you’re doing something super fun to celebrate!

  1. Favorite first lady I can think of right now is Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis!
Very excited for this book–am interviewing author over on my blog later this month. This was a fantastic interview!

  2. Love this interview concept–so quick and fun!

My favorite first lady is Dolley Madison. If I remember right, when the British sacked Washington, D.C., during the War of 1812, she managed to smuggle an original portrait of George Washington out of the White House. She would have made a good ninja.
