Thrice Interview + Giveaway: BOY + BOT

Hi! Today we’re celebrating Ame Dyckman’s awesome picture book, BOY AND BOT, illustrated by Dan Yaccarino!

One day, a boy and a robot meet in the woods. They play. They have fun.

But when Bot gets switched off, Boy thinks he’s sick. The usual remedies—applesauce, reading a story—don’t help, so Boy tucks the sick Bot in, then falls asleep.

Bot is worried when he powers on and finds his friend powered off. He takes Boy home with him and tries all his remedies: oil, reading an instruction manual. Nothing revives the malfunctioning Boy! Can the Inventor help fix him?

Using the perfect blend of sweetness and humor, this story of an adorable duo will win the hearts of the very youngest readers.

1. Describe your main character in 3 adjectives + a noun.

Boy is a friendly, helpful, caring boy.  Bot is a friendly, helpful, caring robot.

2. Describe your book in 3 adjectives + a noun.

BOY + BOT is a sweet, funny, friendship-despite-difference story.

3. Describe yourself in 3 adjectives + a noun.

I am a friendly, quirky, hyphen-using rule-breaker.

4. If you could travel to any 3 countries, what would they be?

I’d travel to England, because I like double-decker buses.  I’d travel to Belgium, because I like waffles.  And I’d travel to Hawaii, because I’m really bad at geography. (Jess: bwahaha!)

5. If you could take any 3 non-writing-related classes, what would they be?

I’d take an art class, because I currently can’t draw any animal that has more than two legs, or any person who has a nose.  I’d take an omelet-cooking class, because every time I set out to cook an omelet, it ends up as scrambled eggs.  And I’d take a hypnosis class, because I like the sound of clucking chickens, but we live in a residential zone.

6. If you could have 3 alternate careers, what would they be?

I LOVE books, so I’d probably be a librarian, a bookseller, or a lion tamer.  (I figure I’d have to read lots of books on lion taming before I gave it a try.)

7. What are 3 of your favorite flowers?

I like daisies, tulips, and especially snapdragons, because you can pinch them and make them look like they’re talking.  (“I’m going to bite you!  Oh yes, I am!”) (Jess: I love snapdragons too, and I’m totally going to do this now.)

8. What are 3 of your favorite foods?

I love pizza, dark chocolate, and SPICY peppers.  Sometimes I combine all three!

9. What are 3 of your favorite books?

I can only choose three?!  Okay, ALICE IN WONDERLAND, FANTASTIC MR. FOX, and WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE.  (In my opinion, it’s the best picture book in the whole world!)

Thanks so much for the interview, Ame! Your answers are hilarious. Obviously I need to get copies of BOY + BOT for all my friends with babies!

Ame has been generous enough to offer up a prize:  a signed copy of the book and BOY + BOT swag (mini Frisbee, bracelet, bookmark, sticker). Awesome, right? Just leave a comment below to enter, and I’ll choose a winner next Monday at noon EST! US only, please!

  1. What a great interview and I love the creative use of hyphens. I happen to have yellow (most cheerful color ever) snapdragons in front of my house. They are truly awesome. I have never used them for talking or biting before though. I will need to run out and try it immediately! Thanks for the idea.

  2. What a great interview! I read this book this summer and it is going to be a big hit with my students and staff this fall. My 7 year old son was transfixed and read most of it himself. So proud!

Thank you for your hard work!

  3. This book sounds amazing! The concept and cover alone are incredibly charming, and I'm always won over by robots (and frisbees, coincidentally, so I'm equally psyched about the swag). Thanks for the hilarious interview and great giveaway!

What a great book and awesome interview as well! Looks like a book that kids would want to read over and over and I wouldn't mind having to read over and over either : )

Boy + Bot sounds like it will be a great companion to Wonder and help kids accept and celebrate differences. Thank you for the chance to win a great book!

  6. I'm so happy to be living in an age where children's lit authors know what they''re doing. Ok -we had Sedak, Seuss, and Brown….but today we're rich in lively children's authors! Thanks for Boy+ Bot!

  7. Hi, everybody! Wow, thanks for your wonderfully kind comments! (Look! You made Bot blush!) 😉 And Jess, THANK YOU SO MUCH for having me here on your terrific blog–I had a fantastic time! CONGRATULATIONS on BORN WICKED, and happy Summer reading! 🙂
