Thrice Interview Series: THE CABINET OF EARTHS

Hi! Today we’re celebrating the release of Anne Nesbet’s MG fantasy THE CABINET OF EARTHS, which released last week!

All Maya really wants is for her mother to be well again. But when her baby brother James goes missing, 12-year-old Maya has to take on the magical underworld of Paris, in which houses have bronze salamanders for door handles, the most beautiful people are all hooked on the sweet-smelling “anbar,” and a shimmering glass Cabinet of Earths has chosen Maya to be its next keeper. With the Cabinet’s help, Maya may be able to do for her mother what doctors cannot: save her from death, once and for all. But now that the clock is ticking for James, the price the Cabinet demands may be too high.

About the Thrice Interview Series: The original title for BORN WICKED was THRICE BLESSED. I have a tattoo with the word thrice, which is partly to remind me how joyful writing the first book was, back when it was just mine, and partly because I like threes. Cate Cahill is one of three sisters, as am I. My birthday is May 3; my anniversary is Sept 30; my book deal happened when I was 30. So…you may notice a common theme to my interview questions.

1.  Describe your main character in 3 adjectives + a noun.

Maya is a brave, resourceful, and worried 12-year-old.

2. Describe your book in 3 adjectives + a noun.

THE CABINET OF EARTHS is a magical, creepy, and humorous yarn.

3. Describe yourself in 3 adjectives + a noun.

I am a fiddle-playing, speed-reading, uphill-walking writer. (JS note: I wish I could speed-read! So many books, so little time…)

4. If you could travel to any 3 countries, what would they be?

France, Italy, and Bhutan.

5. If you could take any 3 non-writing-related classes, what would they be?

Italian, calculus (let’s give that another try!), and music theory.

6. If you could have 3 alternate careers, what would they be?

Schoolteacher, music teacher, National Parks Ranger

7. What are 3 of your favorite flowers?

Tulips, pennyroyal, the peachy-pinky roses

8. What are 3 of your favorite foods?

Green enchiladas, chicken tikka masala, Thai red curry (JS note: OM NOM curry!)

9. What are 3 of your favorite books?

David Copperfield, Emma, Finn Family Moomintroll

Thanks so much for the fab interview, Anne! I can’t wait to read this book!
